Turnbull’s Metal Engraving Work

Scroll design engraved by Tom McArdle

Tom McArdle is Turnbull Mfg. Co.’s in house metal engraver. Tom has been engraving for 17 years and has been doing the engraving work at Turnbull for 6 years. He learned the craft at Montgomery Community College in North Carolina on the GI Bill while taking night classes. He was originally enrolled in their gunsmithing program but switched to engraving after seeing the beautiful engraving work the students were able to produce after only one year of training.

Tom uses a traditional hammer and chisel or other hand pushed tool along with a magnifying glass to do a lot of the engraving. This is the same technique that has been used for hundreds of years. At times he uses  air powered tools, which have become popular in the industry in the last 30 years. When using the air powered tool he must still direct it by hand. The pneumatic tool provides a very clean cut and is most often used on modern pieces. When restoring older firearms it is important that they have an authentic look. In these cases he would use the traditional hammer and chisel method. None of the engraving work at Turnbull is done by computer programming.

The engraving work done at Turnbull is meant to last for several hundred years. The amount of wear on the engraving depends on a few factors. First is the delicacy of the engraving, finer more intricate designs will wear away quicker than simpler designs. The placement of the design on the firearm also determines how long the engraving will last. Finally how often the firearm is used and handled will play a factor into how well the piece will age.

Example of Tom's lettering work

Tom’s favorite projects to work on are on the opposite ends of the spectrum. He enjoys doing lettering work which is a relatively short project and he also likes to experiment with new designs and use his creativity however it is rare that he has the opportunity to do experimental work. Tom likes to work on lettering because it is extremely difficult to engrave letters that are high quality. People see perfect lettering every day and any mistake in the engraving is easily detected. He is currently working on a project for Keith VanOrman President of Turnbull Mfg. Co. it will be a display piece for his office.

Turnbull Mfg. Co. President Keith VanOrman goes Bear Hunting

Bear HuntingKeith went on his first bear hunting trip on September 14th in Bridgewater Maine at #9 Lake Outfitters. He was invited on the trip by two of his customers. The weather in Bridgewater was very rainy but Keith still had a good time on the hunt. They hunted from tree stands in the woods, Keith was using a 470 Turnbull rifle and a 475 Turnbull rifle.  Bait barrels were strategically placed throughout the woods filled with peanut butter, apples and doughnuts which all appeal to a bear’s sweet tooth. The bears learn where these barrels are and make a habit of checking them for snacks. The amount of bear hunters are strictly limited to provide hunters an increased chance at a bear sighting and having a successful hunt.  Keith was not lucky enough to shoot a bear on the trip. He came close when one came into his line of site but he didn’t have a good shot at it. One of his hunting partners shot a bear between the eyes. They harvested the meat from the bear and had the trophy stuffed.

After hunting Keith visited the Houlton Maine Smith & Wesson plant. He had the opportunity to see hand guns and handcuffs being made. Smith & Wesson is known for making exceptional guns for personal safety and protection.

Tony Stewart Smoke Show

Custom Turnbull Revolvers

Custom Turnbull Mfg. Co. Revolvers for the Smoke Show

On August 17th we attended the Tony Stewart Smoke Show at the Texas Motor Speedway, to benefit Speedway Children’s Charities. The charity was founded to care for children in educational, financial, social, and medial need in an effort to help them live productive lives. We donated two custom revolvers engraved with Tony Stewart’s signature and Speedway Children’s Charities logo for the charity’s auction. We are very pleased to say that the pair of revolvers raised $35,000 for the charity! All together the auction raised $250,000 for Speedway Children’s Charities.

We both had the opportunity to drive 10 laps at the Texas Motor Speedway and ride with Tony Stewart in a Sprint Cup Series car. Doug got up to 136 MPH and Keith reached 138 MPH. The event also included a personalized fire suit and helmet that we were able to take home. After participants had the chance to race around the track in a stock car they celebrated by shooting off our Turnbull Mfg. Co. custom revolvers in Victory Lane.

Following the racing was a question and answer dinner for 200 people featuring Tony Stewart.  The dinner and Speedway Children’s Charities auction was held at the House of Blues in Dallas. Auction items included autographed NASCAR memorabilia, and the Turnbull Mfg. Co. custom revolvers.  After dinner musical entertainment was provided by the Goo Goo Dolls. This event was an amazing experience for us. We are already looking forward to attending next year.

Turnbull on the Road: IndyCar Race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, TX

Our most recent trip took us to the IndyCar Race at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth Thursday, June 3 through Saturday June 5. Another great time in Texas for us with hunting, racing, and more!

The Thursday we arrived, Doug participated in a pig hunt where he shot a pig with a 475 Turnbull. You may have seen the photos on Turnbull Mfg.’s Facebook page

While Doug was finishing up hunting, Keith went to a qualifying race on Thursday evening. During the day on Friday, we went out to visit various gun shops in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area to stop and talk about gun manufacturing and more. That night we headed out to the Winstar World Casino 400K.

Saturday before the big event, Keith got to do a tandem ride in an Indy Car with Arie Luyendyk, Jr. – almost 200mph around the track – AWESOME! We then went to the IndyCar Race that day. Danica Patrick was in the lead, but Team Penske’s, Ryan Briscoe stepped it up and won the race!

Ryan fired off Turnbull pistols in the winner’s circle. We got to meet Roger Penske, owner of the Penske Team that Ryan drives for. As a result of this trip, Keith was invited as a guest of Ryan Briscoe’s over the 4th of July weekend to the IndyRace at the Glen. Check out some pictures on our Facebook page.

Turnbull on the Road: NRA-ILA Convention in Charlotte, NC

The weekend of May 14th, we attended the NRA-ILA convention in Charlotte, NC. We primarily went to the conference to talk with manufacturers that we are partnering with and potential future partners, and to show our support for the NRA. As we become more involved with the manufacturing of firearms, we are working with more and more firearm manufacturers to customize their firearms with finishing.

While walking the exhibits we met a lot of great people in the industry. Many of those recognized Doug by his trademark hat. We were also able to talk with Wayne LaPierre, Executive Vice President of the NRA and Chris Cox, Executive Director of NRA-ILA.

Keith attended the 2nd Annual Celebration of American Values Freedom Event on Saturday, May 15th. While there, Keith heard Glenn Beck and Newt Gingrich speak and even met Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North (see pic)! And, Keith got to see and listen to music legend Charlie Daniels.

We also attended an auction to benefit the NRA-ILA in which we were able to participate by being involved with the donation of a pistol. In a partnership with Kimber, Turnbull Mfg. did the finish work on a Kimber firearm that sold at auction for $10,000! The retail on this gun is $4,300. We were glad to do what we could to support the NRA and had a great time while there
